But it\u2019s clear to me that the origin of this saying is from our parsha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his first attempt to curse the Jewish people, Bilaam fails miserably and angers Balak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing that insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, they try something different.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u2026\u05dc\u05b0\u05da\u05b8-\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05de\u05b8\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b5\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05e8\u05b0\u05d0\u05b6\u05e0\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05dd.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Come, please, with me to another place, from where you will see them \u2026\u2019&nbsp; (23:13)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Location, location, location.&nbsp; Perhaps if we move to another spot the curse will be successful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we know, the results remained the same and failure persisted.&nbsp; An enraged Balak watches Bilaam bless the Jewish people once again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result.&nbsp; So they relocate again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b9\u05bc\u05d0\u05de\u05b6\u05e8 \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05b8\u05e7, \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd, \u05dc\u05b0\u05db\u05b8\u05d4-\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05d0 \u05d0\u05b6\u05e7\u05b8\u05bc\u05d7\u05b2\u05da\u05b8, \u05d0\u05b6\u05dc-\u05de\u05b8\u05e7\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b7\u05d7\u05b5\u05e8; \u05d0\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05b7\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b4\u05d9\u05e9\u05b7\u05c1\u05e8 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e2\u05b5\u05d9\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e7\u05b7\u05d1\u05b9\u05bc\u05ea\u05d5\u05b9 \u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05b8\u05bc\u05c1\u05dd<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u05d5\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05bc\u05e7\u05b7\u05bc\u05d7 \u05d1\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05b8\u05e7, \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea-\u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd, \u05e8\u05b9\u05d0\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e4\u05b0\u05bc\u05e2\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8, \u05d4\u05b7\u05e0\u05b4\u05bc\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05e7\u05b8\u05e3 \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc-\u05e4\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d4\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05d9\u05de\u05b9\u05df.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Balak said to Bilaam: \u2018Come now, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse them for me from there.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Balak took Bilaam to the top of Peor, that looks down upon the desert.&nbsp; (23:27-28).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Failure again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mishan in Avos teaches us<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc \u05de\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05d9\u05b5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9 \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05dc\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05d4 \u05d3\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d4\u05b7\u05dc\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc, \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc. \u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05dc\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05d4 \u05d3\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05d0\u05b2\u05d7\u05b5\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd, \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e2. \u05e2\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05df \u05d8\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7 \u05e0\u05b0\u05de\u05d5\u05bc\u05db\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05e4\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4, \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d0\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05dd \u05d0\u05b8\u05d1\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05bc. \u05e2\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05df \u05e8\u05b8\u05e2\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05d7\u05b7 \u05d2\u05b0\u05bc\u05d1\u05d5\u05b9\u05d4\u05b8\u05d4, \u05d5\u05b0\u05e0\u05b6\u05e4\u05b6\u05e9\u05c1 \u05e8\u05b0\u05d7\u05b8\u05d1\u05b8\u05d4, \u05de\u05b4\u05ea\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05d3\u05b8\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05d1\u05b4\u05bc\u05dc\u05b0\u05e2\u05b8\u05dd \u05d4\u05b8\u05e8\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05e2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever possesses these three things, he is of the disciples of Abraham, our father; and [whoever possesses] three other things, he is of the disciples of Bilaam, the wicked. A good eye, a humble spirit and a moderate appetite he is of the disciples of Abraham, our father. An evil eye, a haughty spirit and a limitless appetite he is of the disciples of Bilaam, the wicked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir Bergman in his work,&nbsp;<em>Shaarei Orah&nbsp;<\/em>contrasts Bilaam\u2019s musical chairs with the Talmud\u2019s description of Avraham Avinu (Brachot 6b)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u05d0\u05de\u05e8 \u05e8\u05d1\u05d9 \u05d7\u05dc\u05d1\u05d5 \u05d0\u05de\u05e8 \u05e8\u05d1 \u05d4\u05d5\u05e0\u05d0 \u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05e7\u05d5\u05d1\u05e2 \u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05dd \u05dc\u05ea\u05e4\u05dc\u05ea\u05d5 \u05d0\u05dc\u05d4\u05d9 \u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd \u05d1\u05e2\u05d6\u05e8\u05d5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u05d5\u05db\u05e9\u05de\u05ea \u05d0\u05d5\u05de\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05d5 \u05d0\u05d9 \u05e2\u05e0\u05d9\u05d5 \u05d0\u05d9 \u05d7\u05e1\u05d9\u05d3 \u05de\u05ea\u05dc\u05de\u05d9\u05d3\u05d9\u05d5 \u05e9\u05dc \u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd \u05d0\u05d1\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One who sets a fixed place for his prayer, the God of Abraham assists him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he dies, those who eulogize him will say: \u201cWhere is the humble one, where is the pious one, of the disciples of our father Abraham?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u05d5\u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd \u05d0\u05d1\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05de\u05e0\u05d0 \u05dc\u05df \u05d3\u05e7\u05d1\u05e2 \u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05dd \u05d3\u05db\u05ea\u05d9\u05d1 \u05d5\u05d9\u05e9\u05db\u05dd \u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd \u05d1\u05d1\u05e7\u05e8 \u05d0\u05dc \u05d4\u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05dd \u05d0\u05e9\u05e8 \u05e2\u05de\u05d3 \u05e9\u05dd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gemara asks:&nbsp;From where do we&nbsp;derive&nbsp;that Abraham our father set a fixed place&nbsp;for his prayer? The Gemara answers:&nbsp;As it is written: \u201cAnd Abraham rose in the morning to the place where he had stood&nbsp;before God\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.19.27\">Genesis 19:27<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Where is Genesis 19:27?&nbsp; Immediately after the destruction of Sedom.&nbsp; Immediately after disappointment.&nbsp; Avrham\u2019s failure to save the city of Sedom through his prayers.&nbsp; How does Avraham react to failure?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He does the exact same thing the next day.&nbsp; Like many of us each week, he returned to the same seat and continued to pray.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, but the difference between Bilaam and Avraham was not insanity: it was humility.&nbsp; Avraham understood that it was not the seat or the view that led to his unanswered tefillot.&nbsp; His self-reflected and continued to improve himself and to daven, never looking for external excuses to change his environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight begins the three weeks.&nbsp; It is a disheartening and depressing to realize that for almost two thousand years we have been observing these customs, fasting these fast days, and praying for the rebuilding of the Beit Hamikdash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students of Bilaam would point out that doing the same thing year after year is insane, and that it is time move on.&nbsp; But as students of Avraham, we must realize we are a nation of consistency. That even our great forefathers experienced the empty feeling of picking up the siddur again after an unanswered tefillah.&nbsp; It\u2019s not insane to try again and again; it\u2019s only insane to not look within ourselves for change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a famous saying that the definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different result.
