At the beginning of our parsha, Pharoah gathers all the magician sand wise men of Egypt in search of an interpretation of his dreams. But to no avail. Yosef is dragged out of prison, he suggests an interpretation, and the rest is history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes the two are called one, as it says, \u201cAnd Pharaoh awoke \u2013 it was a dream<\/em>!\u201d (41:7); \u201cAnd Pharaoh told them his dream<\/em>\u201c (41:8); \u201cAnd Pharaoh said to Joseph, \u2018I have dreamed a dream<\/em>\u2019\u201d (41:15); \u201cIn my dream<\/em> I was standing\u2026\u201d (41:17); \u201cI saw in my dream<\/em>\u2026\u201d(41:22) Therefore, I think that Pharaoh himself felt that everything was one dream, which is why he always spoke of it in the singular. But the interpreters thought they were two separate dreams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Every single time that Pharoah discusses his dream he refers to it in the singular! <\/p>\n\n\n\n Yosef knew the dreams were one because Pharoah said so explicitly and repeatedly! <\/p>\n\n\n\n The interpreters stubbornly assumed that the two images, the cows and the sheaves, required two interpretations. They offered razzle dazzle explanations to demonstrate their expertise, but Pharaoh knew they were wrong. He understood that the two dreams were one, AS HE SAID AGAIN AND AGAIN! Pharoah wa sno prophet; he accepted Yosef\u2019s interpretation because Yosef was the first person who listened carefully to his description of his vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We have all experienced the frustration of speaking to someone who is not listening. He or she may make eye contact, or even nod along, but as you share your story, issue, or feelings, you can see the gears turning in his or her head. Those gears are not processing what you said; they are simply waiting for you to stop speaking, waiting for a turn to speak next. The moment you finish your thought, the other person happily shares the first thought that popped into his or her head, only barely relating to the content you just shared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n We lack the divine inspiration, and often the creativity and innovation, to solve every issue shared with us. Most often, that is not what is expected of us. No doubt it can be difficult, but if we can focus our attention on listening to those speaking to us, to notice the tone and feelings being shared, to appreciate and take note of the details, we will find that the magnetic appeal that fueled Yosef\u2019s success is something we can all emulate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
