{"id":293,"date":"2024-03-03T02:33:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-03T02:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/?p=293"},"modified":"2024-03-03T02:33:20","modified_gmt":"2024-03-03T02:33:20","slug":"kindness-at-all-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/03\/kindness-at-all-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Kindness at All Costs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The parsha begins with Avraham\u2019s tremendous display of kindness, as he overcomes physical discomfort to warmly welcome three strangers and provide them with an extravagant feast.&nbsp; As the parsha progresses, we find Lot display similar kindness towards his guests.&nbsp; In a community which seriously discouraged acts of kindness, Lot went ahead and invited guests to his home, risking his life to tend to their needs.&nbsp; As the inhabitants of Sedom swarm around Lot\u2019s home, he heroically refuses to hand his guests over to the Sodomites.&nbsp; In context of his tremendous chessed, Lot\u2019s next decision seems shocking: he offers to give his two daughters over to the angry mob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How could a man who welcomes his guests so warmly, who offers them safety and hospitality, who seems to have picked up so much of the righteousness of Avraham, suddenly make such a twisted error and display such a despicable value system, where he is willing to betray his own family?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I heard in the name of Rav Mayer Twersky that Lot\u2019s decision here came from a perversion of chessed.&nbsp; Avraham lived a life of chessed, and Lot\u2019s desire to emulate Avraham\u2019s hachnasat orchim was so strong that he clung to this value at all costs.&nbsp; Lot could not fathom giving up on his last string of connection to Avraham, to the point that he would sacrifice whatever he needed to help his guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My father often quotes Steven Covey saying \u201cthe main thing is to make the main thing the main thing.\u201d&nbsp; Lot\u2019s error here was isolating one aspect of Avraham\u2019s character and making that \u201cthe main thing\u201d.&nbsp; &nbsp;Avraham wasn\u2019t simply a person obsessed with taking care of guests; he was a balanced person fully committed to a life of serving G-d, and his uncompromising pursuit of chessed was a manifestation of that commitment.&nbsp; While it can be beneficial for a person to put extra vigor into certain commandments, the moment a person loses sight of the big picture, picking and choosing which mitzvot are important to himself or herself, one has the potential to make lapses in judgment.&nbsp; We should all strive to fulfill all of the mitzvot and maintain a balanced life in serving Hashem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The parsha begins with Avraham\u2019s tremendous display of kindness, as he overcomes physical discomfort to warmly welcome three strangers and provide them with an extravagant feast.&nbsp; As the parsha progresses, we find Lot display similar kindness towards his guests.&nbsp; In a community which seriously discouraged acts of kindness, Lot went ahead and invited guests to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"saved_in_kubio":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[10,11,17],"tags":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/293"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=293"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/293\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":294,"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/293\/revisions\/294"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=293"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=293"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/remoteshul.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=293"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
